Something that's best avoided, unless you're the guy who came up with the scheme.
The idea is that each person not only sells a product, but sells the NETWORK. He gets revenue from his own sales, and a % of the sales of the people he signs up, and a % of the people they sign up (and so on).
It's a pretty good scheme for the guys who make the products, and get in at the beginning, but not necessarily so good for the average joe.
What makes them problematic — more so than other jobs — is that a lot of recruiting is done by friends who have a strong financial incentive to bring in new recruits. As a result, tactics can get a little sketchy.
It's a pyramid scheme. Wikipedia has a good article about it, and so does.

IT IS A MARKETING SYSTEM WHEREBY BRANCHES UPON BRANCHES ARE CREATED BY INVITING PEOPLE TO JOIN IN THE MARKETING PLAN. EACH PERSON THAT JOINS STARTS HIS OWN FAMILY BRANCH AND CAN HAVE UP TO 10TH GENERATION. COMMISSIONS ARE PAID BASED ON PEFOMANCE.
